He is one of the most recognizable contributors to country music with hit albums from the 1970’s like Shotgun Willie, Red Headed Stranger, and Stardust. A main figure-head of ‘outlaw country’, a sound that arose from the reaction to conservative restrictions of the ‘Nashville’ sound. Nelson is an advocate of liberalism and environmentalism, has written several books, and has been involvd in the legalization of marijuana and the use of biofuels. He began writing music from a very young age and truly began his carreer as a disc jockey in Texas in the 1950’s and also played in several local bands like Bohemian Polka and Honkey Tonks. After this, he moved to Washington and wrote ‘Family Bible’. In 1960 he singed with Pamper Music and joined Ray Price’s band as the bass player where he wrote many country standards like “Crazy”, “Funny How Time Slips Away” and “Hello Walls”. After the success of his first album And Then I Wrote, Nelson decided to retire after his music began hitting only mid-chart during the 1960’s. After the rise of hippie music, Nelson inspiredly rose out of retirement and signed with Atlantic Records. He released albums such as Shotgun Willie and Phases and Stages. In 1975, he switched to Columbia Records, where he recorded the critically acclaimed album, Red Headed Stranger. During the mid 1980s, while creating hit albums like Honeysuckle Rose and recording hit songs like "On the Road Again", "To All the Girls I've Loved Before", and "Pancho & Lefty", he joined the country supergroup The Highwaymen, along with fellow singers, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. In more recent years, Nelson has continued touring extensively, and releases albums every year, exploring other genres like reggae, blues, and jazz.
