In 1980 at the NBA All-Star Game, league owners voted to admit a new team franchise from Dallas, Texas called the Mavericks, named after the TV western Maverick. For much of the 1980s, the Mavericks boast a very good team in the highly competitive Western Conference. Original draft players led by Mark Aguirre included Brad Davis, Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper, Sam Perkins and Detlef Shrempf. The Mavericks made the playoffs six of seven times from 1983–90. They won the Midwest Division on 1986-87 and earned a place at the Western Conference Finals in 1988. The Los Angeles Lakes keep them from reaching a deeper place in the playoffs, however. The Mavericks had a slow and uneventful decade during the 90’s, but in the early 2000’s they were led by Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley, and Steve Nash. They returned eventually to the Conference Finals in 2003. Their best season came in 2006 when they won 67 games and earned the NBA’s best record. All together the Mavericks have won three division titles and one conference championship, making them one of the most valuable basketball franchises in the US.
